Context
The European Green Deal plays a crucial role in shaping future climate and environmental policies within the EU and its impact is felt on economic relations with the Eastern Partnership (EaP) countries - Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine. Despite the efforts of EaP countries to transform their economy and implement initiatives in key sectors such as agriculture and industry, there is still a challenge in demonstrating how climate-oriented, resilient and green economic development can be achieved in practice.
Furthermore, the EaP countries are working towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions and becoming climate-neutral by 2050, aligning with the Paris Agreement and their commitments to the European Union. Many of these countries are already developing strategies to reduce emissions and adapt to climate change. However, extreme weather events like floods, heatwaves and droughts are becoming more common, hitting people directly and resulting in economic losses.
Objective
To support EaP countries in the long-term mitigation and sustainable development consistent with the EU Green Deal objectives and 1.5°C pathways of the Paris Agreement thus supporting transition towards climate-oriented, resilient and green economic development.
Approach
The project promotes the introduction of innovative technologies, tools and methodologies in the selected value chains, supports better access to financing options and further improvement of existing financing mechanisms and instruments. Good practices and expertise are fostered via regional exchange.
EU4ClimateResilience works to improve policies, enhance systems for tracking and reducing emissions and integrate climate goals into national development plans. Moreover, it supports local communities to adapt to climate impacts.
