Context

Research indicates that children frequently exposed to violence, especially in early life, are more likely to become perpetrators or victims of violence in adulthood. Simultaneously, parents and caregivers affected by interpersonal violence struggle to provide a secure environment for their children. Moreover, patriarchal gender norms and roles significantly contribute to gender-based violence (GBV) in South Africa, making violence an accepted method of conflict resolution among many people.

To counter this, promoting positive gender norms and healthy views of masculinity are crucial components of children's development. Implementing gender-responsive approaches within childcare environments can reduce the risk of children experiencing or committing violence in both childhood and adulthood. These approaches also raise awareness of gender equality, helping to build a safer and more inclusive society for future generations.

Objective

The structural conditions for implementing evidence-based, gender-responsive early violence prevention measures have been improved.

Approach

The project focuses on early violence prevention for children aged zero to twelve, targeting the caregiving environments for children, early childhood development centres, and schools, addressing the intersections between violence against women and children.

The project uses a life cycle approach to violence prevention, implementing early interventions for long-term impact in three main areas:

  • Localised implementation: The project develops and implements proven methods to enhance early prevention services for children and caregivers in a thorough, coordinated, and sustainable manner at the local level.
  • Improved multistakeholder coordination: It improves collaboration between different government and civil society networks for gender-responsive, early prevention of violence.
  • Strengthened institutional capacity: The project boosts the abilities of state and civil society actors, who are responsible for early prevention of violence.
