International cooperation needs strong partners. We work closely with companies and business associations. Together with German and European companies, in particular, we draw on private sector expertise and resources where this can make a real difference – in our partner countries. Companies benefit from our long-standing experience in sustainability and our strong local, regional and international networks.
A win-win: the private sector meets development
The private sector and development aid do not need to be mutually exclusive. In fact, when businesses and development organisations work together, the resulting projects offer double the benefits.
Investing responsibly – promoting development
On behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, we support companies with sustainable investment in emerging economies and developing countries. One example is the develoPPP programme. Here, we bring companies, governments and civil society representatives together to develop innovative solutions for greater sustainability.
How development partnerships work
The companies cover at least half of the project costs – by providing money, know-how, technologies and/or expertise. We contribute our knowledge, contacts and public funds. Both sides share the costs and risks. We coordinate measures jointly or one partner takes the lead, according to the specific project. Depending on the type of partnership, GIZ’s public share and the private contribution can amount to up to EUR 2 million. Companies from a wide range of sectors also commission us directly to implement their goals in developing countries and emerging economies in line with the Sustainable Development Goals.
