We work worldwide to shape a future worth living. Yet our work is not only having an impact in our partner countries. International cooperation boosts stability, mitigates the root causes of forced displacement, opens up markets and builds trust, all of which have a direct effect on Germany.
A positive impact in Germany’s interest
Global crises do not stop at borders. GIZ is helping to tackle them at their source, for the benefit of people all over the world – including in Germany.
‘International cooperation brings stability to crisis regions. And, ultimately, stability means peace and security – including in Germany.’
What Germany gains from international cooperation
Whether it is climate change [Link: Klimawandel], conflicts [Link: Frieden und Sicherheit] or migration [Link: Flucht und Migration], global challenges do not stop at borders: the whole of Europe – Germany included – feels the consequences. This is why GIZ’s work also constitutes a wise precaution that serves the national interest.
Our activities are building resilient relationships and opening doors for development – and for German interests.
Here is one example: Germany needs skilled workers, and many people all over the world are seeking safe, secure and legal opportunities for labour migration. We are helping to bring the two sides together through training partnerships and programmes, and orderly migration.
How international partnerships are securing Germany’s energy supply
Germany is reliant on imports: this also applies to energy. In countries such as Namibia and Morocco, we are helping to establish reliable infrastructure for green hydrogen [Link: Grüner Wasserstoff] and advising on standards, safety, security and conditions. This is how we are laying the groundwork for Germany to be able to import climate-neutral hydrogen in the future – while opening up new opportunities for partner countries.
International cooperation has a triple impact
-
1On the ground
We are making direct improvements to people’s lives, for example through education and jobs.
-
2Regionally
In around 120 countries, we are strengthening structures and boosting prospects that will build stability.
-
3Within Germany
We are helping to promote partnerships for skilled labour, open up markets for Germany’s private sector and supporting investment in comprehensive climate action.

How we are making an impact in crisis regions – the example of Ukraine
On behalf of the German Government [Link:Bundesregierung], the European Union [Link: Uns beauftragen > Europäische Union] and other partners, we are helping to rebuild the Ukrainian economy – by training skilled workers and providing direct support for companies. We are attracting investors to the country and involving both German and international businesses in the reconstruction efforts.
