Context

Colombia is one of the countries that are most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Territorial development models ignoring the environment and biodiversity are threatening livelihoods. This contributes to societal challenges such as extreme events like floods and droughts, food and water insecurity, and intensifies poverty and unemployment.

Objective

In Colombia, the implementation of nature-based solutions supports communities to become more resilient, biodiverse and reduce their carbon footprint. These actions contribute to climate, biodiversity and further development goals.

Approach

GIZ joins forces with Fondo Acción and The Nature Conservancy, and reaches out to local communities, subnational entities, environmental authorities, financial stakeholders and the committees of the National Climate Change System, among others. The aim is to:

  • strengthen local innovation and research clusters and help them to develop a portfolio of nature-based solutions in each of the three prioritised departments of Cordoba, Huila and Santander,
  • improve financial support and local capacities for implementing, monitoring and evaluating nature-based solutions,
  • prioritise and co-finance 24 nature-based solutions.
