Initial Situation
Sport has been internationally recognized by the UN as a means of promoting education, health, and peacebuilding. Through sport, children and young people live healthier lives and learn responsibility, fairness and conflict resolution. These key qualifications make it easier for them to start their careers later on. German Development Cooperation trains trainers who act as role models and confidants. They give children and young people a stronger sense of self-esteem and help them to develop future prospects. Health issues such as HIV prevention and alcohol abuse are also addressed. Together with partners from politics, civil society, business and science, German development cooperation is developing sustainable sports activities to educate, strengthen civil society and promote democracy.
Objective
The project aims to establish sport as a means of achieving development goals in African countries. S4DA is thus contributing to the initiative "Mehr Platz für Sport – 1.000 Chancen für Afrika".
Approach
In selected locations such as municipal facilities, youth centres, vocational schools, educational institutions, refugee camps and refugee-receiving communities, as well as in rural regions, simple sports fields are being rehabilitated or newly built. S4DA strengthens the competencies of the local partners so that they can operate and use the sports fields sustainably – both in terms of technical maintenance and activities. Management skills are strengthened locally. Trainers trained by S4DA and partners offer sports activities aimed at promoting social skills. Children and young people playfully acquire key skills that qualify for the labour market, serve for peaceful conflict resolution or promote positive personality development. Young, adult trainers are role models and are involved as multipliers.
