Digital transformation is a structural change with far-reaching consequences for the economy, society and the environment. It plays a key role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Digitalisation is changing society, the economy, and politics. The task of development policy is to support partner countries in leveraging the potential of digitalisation in order to make faster progress towards achieving the SDGs. In this way, digitalisation can make a positive contribution to a wide range of SDGs of the 2030 Agenda along all three dimensions of sustainability – economic, social and ecological. At the same time, it is important to advise and support the countries in overcoming the challenges of digitalisation. Particular attention is paid to aspects of gender equality, as women have not yet benefited from the opportunities offered by digitalisation to the same extent as men. This transformative role of digitalization takes on additional significance in the context of the turning point, which is marked by the confluence of several complex crises and in particular the war against Ukraine. Shaping digitalisation in the context of development cooperation can help to find answers to these global challenges. The global and geopolitical dependencies highlighted by the turning point make a development dimension and international cooperation – including on digitalisation – unavoidable to promote peace, prosperity and security.
The Global Project (AGM) supports the BMZ's contributions to the Federal Government's new national and international digital strategy in implementation of the new work priority "Digital Transformation". Based on the "Guidelines of German Development Cooperation in the Context of the Turning Point", the project contributes to the cross-sectoral and cross-regional development of the opportunities of digital transformation and combating its risks in German development cooperation. Together with sector and regional departments of the BMZ, the roll-out of the developed methodological approaches by other bilateral and regional TC/FC projects, other donors, the ICT sector and partner contributions will be promoted
