Green Hydrogen and Power-to-X

Green hydrogen is a vital component in facilitating the energy transition, particularly in sectors where the integration of direct renewable energies such as solar and wind is challenging. This is the case in the chemical industry, steel production, the production of aviation and marine fuels. In such industries, green hydrogen and power-to-X (PtX) products can serve as a replacement for fossil fuels. PtX technology facilitates the conversion of renewable electricity into alternative energy sources, such as synthetic fuels.

Cooperation with industry

The market for green hydrogen and PtX products is still in its infancy. Private companies are the primary drivers of market expansion, though they frequently require support. GIZ's comprehensive portfolio encompasses the promotion of climate-friendly hydrogen utilisation in countries of the global South, with a focus on its development and dissemination. As an experienced federal enterprise in the field of economic development, climate and energy, we support companies that wish to enter these markets with the following services:

  • Project support: We provide support for project preparation in countries of the global South, encompassing country scoping, project identification, the development of business models and advice on risk mitigation.
  • Networking and matchmaking: In our partner countries, we have excellent contacts with ministries and administrative, business and scientific bodies at national, regional and local level.
  • Financial and operational support: We provide support for the initial stages of projects within the framework of public-private partnerships.
  • Training and further education: We provide PtX training for specialists and managers of public and private stakeholders in partner countries and train trainers.
  • Advising governments: We help develop standards, frameworks and hydrogen strategies and work closely with the European Commission and international organisations.

Moving into the future with green hydrogen

As part of its National Hydrogen Strategy, Germany is focusing on international partnerships to produce sustainable hydrogen and PtX products. These collaborations strengthen energy security, reduce dependence on individual suppliers and open up opportunities for German companies to export advanced technologies. They also contribute to achieving global climate goals and strengthen economic and social development in the global South.
