Call for Proposals: Grants for R&D in Vaccine and Pharmaceutical Manufacturing in Ghana

 

Apply for funding of up to EUR 500,000 for research and development (R&D) projects that drive innovation in Ghana’s pharmaceutical and vaccine manufacturing sector.

As part of the PharmaVax Ghana programme, the National Vaccine Institute of Ghana and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH are launching a call for proposals to support collaborative partnerships in R&D that promote the discovery, development and production of vaccines, medicines and other pharmaceutical products. Applications will be accepted until 29.05.2025.

The PharmaVax Ghana programme is part of the Team Europe Initiative on Manufacturing and Access to Vaccines, Medicines and Health Technologies in Africa (MAV+) and is co-financed by the European Union (EU) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

What type of projects are funded?

The projects shall consist of applied R&D work regarding one of the following broad thematic areas: vaccines (including biosimilars) and other biological products; sera including anti-venoms; herbal medicines; medicines for neglected tropical diseases and orphan drugs; medicines for conditions of public health relevance including non-communicable diseases and infectious diseases; medical diagnostics and devices for drug application; veterinary vaccines.

Projects can range from drug discovery and development, innovations in product formulation to clinical trials and other related R&D work.

Who can apply?

Eligible to apply are partnership consortia in the R&D field. The consortia should be led by a Ghanaian public or private research institution and involve at least one Ghanaian pharmaceutical manufacturer as a co-applicant. Involvement of further collaborators including international partners is possible.

What is the scope of the support?

Three funding windows are available for projects spanning a maximum period of 24 months: up to EUR 125,000; up to EUR 300,000; up to EUR 500,000 . Proposals will be selected based on a criteria-based, competitive process. Proposals must be submitted by 1st June 2025.
