Context
Biodiversity loss and climate change are two of the biggest challenges facing the world today. Tackling these challenges purposefully requires rapid implementation progress, and synergies between climate and biodiversity protection need to be harnessed. This is the only way to achieve the targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Paris Agreement of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Greater efforts are needed at national and international level to revise the national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs), nationally determined contributions (NDCs) and long-term strategies (LTS).
Objective
Selected partners can improve the political framework to facilitate implementation of effective instruments for biodiversity and climate change mitigation and adaptation protection.
Approach
The project supports the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) with negotiations on the CBD and UNFCCC, and in relation to the intersection between biodiversity and climate, by providing specialist input and policy advice.
Furthermore, through gender-responsive dialogue formats and knowledge products, it contributes to the development of integrated approaches and synergies between biodiversity protection, climate change mitigation and adaptation. This includes closer dovetailing of national biodiversity strategies and climate strategies. Through lessons learned and knowledge sharing, the project also supports international initiatives, partnerships and knowledge networks for biodiversity and climate protection and ecosystem-based adaptation, including the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership and the NDC Partnership.
