Context

The Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development set the international targets for climate action and climate-friendly energy. The final report of the first global stocktake, which was presented in 2023 on the progress made under the Paris Agreement, also calls for a more rapid and climate-friendly energy transition.

This requires an energy supply based on renewable energies, lower energy consumption and greater energy efficiency. At the same time, governments must reduce fossil fuel use and eliminate climate-damaging subsidies. With global greenhouse gas emissions at high levels and rising, all countries must strive to reduce these significantly faster in order to achieve the 1.5 degree target for global warming.

Objective

Partnerships and international initiatives on energy and climate action contribute to defining and implementing more ambitious climate targets.

Approach

The project advises the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) on international measures at the interface between energy and climate policy. It also supports BMWK in shaping long-term energy and climate strategies, as well as with its participation in multilateral processes such as the UN climate change conferences.

Advisory services are also provided on implementing the open and inclusive climate club established by the Group of Seven (G7) industrialised nations under the German Presidency. The Climate Club is a forum for ambitious countries to accelerate the implementation of the Paris Agreement.

The project also advises BMWK in order to promote the market for renewable energies and climate-friendly technologies and to mobilise the private sector for the energy transition. To this end, it develops knowledge products that describe the need for climate-friendly energy, its implementation and the progress made.
