Context
There is less and less water available in Tunisia, with major regional differences in the water resources available. However, according to climate change forecasts, Tunisia's water resources are at risk in the long term. The reasons for this are rising temperatures, decreasing precipitation, increasing demand for water in agriculture and overuse of groundwater resources. Farmers, especially women and young people, are the groups most at risk from climate change. Many have few alternative employment and income opportunities apart from their small-scale farming activities.
Objective
The use of natural resources is better managed and adapted to climate change.
Approach
The project supports the Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fishery in implementing measures to protect natural resources. The aim is to make better use of rainwater and groundwater, conserve soil and hence create jobs. Municipalities as well as private sector and civil society organisations in the governorate of Jendouba are participating.
The project pursues a systemic approach linking the resource management of soil and water with Tunisia's climate policy. Key stakeholders, including farmers, receive training as well as organisational and process advice. Networking with the Ministry of the Environment in order to implement climate policy is promoted.
At the same time, the project is helping to expand the role of women in climate-resilient resource management by involving them in municipal decision-making.
