Context
In Mexico, 98 per cent of all companies are micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). They create jobs for 75 per cent of the population and generate just over half of the country's gross domestic product (GDP). Their significant impact on the economy also means that they have great potential to reduce greenhouse gases (GHG). However, the challenge for many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in particular is that they lack the funding and resources necessary to implement energy efficiency measures.
Objective
Mexico has a dynamic and robust market for energy efficiency in the SME segment. This increases the competitiveness of companies and contributes to climate change mitigation.
Approach
The programme works with SMEs in Mexico to identify energy-saving measures and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It operates in three fields of activity:
- It creates additional funding and incentives to stimulate the market. To achieve this, it mobilises private and public funding to make it easier for SMEs to obtain financing on preferential terms.
- It promotes the supply of products and services for energy efficiency. It also improves the technical skills of companies and individuals developing energy efficiency projects.
- The programme raises market awareness and creates additional solutions. It shows that energy efficiency increases the competitiveness of companies and at the same time reduces their environmental impact. The programme forms alliances with key actors to ensure the long-term effectiveness of measures.
The SMEs receive technical and financial support from the Mitigation Action Facility on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), the Danish Ministry for Climate, Energy and Utilities (KEFM), the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), the European Union and the Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF).
