German Foreign Office State Secretary Jennifer Morgan visits Tacloban
In April 2023, State Secretary Jennifer Morgan visited Tacloban, a city in the eastern part of the Philippines which is highly affected by increasing extreme weather events.
She chose this destination to learn about loss and damage and adaptation challenges on the ground, particularly against the backdrop of Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in 2013, the effects of which are still visible today and still have an impact on the local population. After talking to survivors and visiting the memorial for the typhoon, she also learned about the International Climate Initiative (IKI) Project “Strengthening Disaster Resilience and Risk Mitigation through Ecosystem-based Planning and Adaptation (E4DR),” which is currently implemented in the region. The Project aims to ensure that national authorities and key stakeholders use ecosystem-based adaptation and climate insurance to strengthen disaster risk management in the Philippines.
