Context

Uganda is rich with biomass, water, solar, geothermal and wind energy resources. However, these resources are not used efficiently, which is why much of this potential is wasted. This leaves many people without access to electricity and clean energy for cooking, especially in the northern region. This hinders local economic development because the available energy resources are not used for production purposes. Many social institutions also lack reliable energy to provide quality health care and education.

Objective

The programme supports the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD) in implementing strategies that increase access to renewable energy and energy efficient technologies.

Approach

The Promotion of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Programme (PREEEP) achieves its goals through:

  • Energy Policy Advice: providing advice and support for the implementation of policies and strategies to integrate renewable energy into various sectors
  • Energy Mainstreaming: supporting 22 District Local Governments by mainstreaming energy into all district departments, their workplans and budgets and fostering participatory planning with civil society.
  • Market Development: promoting access to and uptake of renewable energy and energy-efficient technologies in households, social institutions and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)
  • Skills Development: supporting curriculum development and improvement of the educational framework in the renewable-energy sector. Trainers and technicians are skilled and certified in collaboration with relevant national vocational training institutes.
