1st National Stakeholder Forum - Project “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle to Protect the Marine Environment and Coral Reefs” (3RproMar)

On October 27, 2022, the Vietnam Administration of Seas and Islands (Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment) in collaboration with the German Development Cooperation Organization GIZ successfully organized the first National Stakeholder Forum of the Project “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle to Protect the Marine Environment and Coral Reefs” (3RproMar) in Ho Chi Minh City. This is the opening forum in the project's annual series of National Stakeholder Forums, with themes designed for each year.

Bringing the theme ‘Identifying Barriers and Best practices to prevent waste leakage to the sea of Vietnam’, the 1st National Stakeholder Forum aims to promote understanding of the challenges faced by various stakeholders to influence waste leakage from source, especially the management of plastic waste along the value chain.

Representatives from the public sector and academia presented at the forum the state of plastic waste in Vietnam, as well as the existing mechanisms and policies to address the issue. Representatives from the private sector shared current challenges, best practices, and policy changes toward a circular economy. During the plenary session, enterprises and representatives from the central and local levels presented group discussion ideas, exchanged approaches, roles of each sector, cooperation ideas, and necessary actions in a variety of areas, as well as the possibility of cooperating with GIZ to improve the situation of waste leakage into the sea in Vietnam.

A side event: The 3R - 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle' model to prevent the leakage of plastic waste from rivers into the sea in Vietnam exhibition was also held within the framework of the Partner Workshop, with the participation of small and medium-sized enterprises known for their environmental models and solutions, towards a circular economy.

The forum reached its goal of establishing a stakeholder network by bringing together more than 70 delegates from the project's various stakeholder sectors, which include the public sector, academia, the private sector, enterprises in the plastic and plastic recycling industry, and international organizations.

The project ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle to protect the marine environment and coral reefs’ (3RproMar) is implemented by GIZ under the authorization of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the ASEAN Secretariat. The goal of the Project is to solve the problem of waste from land and marine waste in the coming years, implemented in four countries: Cambodia, Indonesia, Philippines, and Vietnam.
