Supporting a green economy

Context

The economic and social effects of the COVID-19 pandemic are jeopardising measures to deal with the global crises of biodiversity loss, environmental pollution and climate change. Integrated policy approaches are needed to promote economic recovery while at the same time reducing carbon dioxide emissions and expanding eco-friendly business models. These approaches must combine economic recovery with environmental and social change to create an Inclusive Green Economy (IGE).

Objective

Decision-makers in the four cooperation countries are able to improve the political framework for IGE. Relevant international partnerships and networks that promote global learning and knowledge generation with regard to IGE are supported.

Approach

Building on three predecessor projects, the project supports transformations in the partner countries – Argentina, Costa Rica, Indonesia and South Africa – with a focus on green fiscal policy, sustainable finance, sustainable infrastructure, inclusion and circular economy.

The project:

• Supports stakeholders from the relevant global partnerships and alliances, such as the Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE), by promoting global learning in international forums.
• Organises dialogue formats and develops knowledge products for country-specific advisory services, such as analyses, policy briefs, studies and peer learning formats.
• Supports the commissioning division in the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) with conferences, network meetings and side events, i.e. at Stockholm+50, PAGE ministerial conferences and UNFCCC climate change conferences.
• Provides strategic support to develop a green and circular economy.

To achieve its objectives, the project’s implementing partner is United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), which supports the project activities on sustainable infrastructure and green fiscal policy.
