Myanmar is facing strong international criticism due to the military coup, the crisis in Rakhine State and the expulsion of religious minorities to Bangladesh. Myanmar is not a bilateral partner country of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Despite some progress in areas such as electrification, education and the economy, the pressure for reform remains high. People in rural areas and conflict zones are disproportionately affected by poverty and precarious living conditions. Educational opportunities are limited and there are not enough ways to earn an income.

On behalf of the German Government, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is supporting crisis prevention by providing transitional development assistance and implementing measures as part of the Special Initiative on Displacement.

GIZ is working in crisis areas in Myanmar to improve nutrition, particularly for women and young children. Training and further education are also creating opportunities for internally displaced people and surrounding communities to improve their incomes.

In addition, various regional, global and sector projects are active in Myanmar, implementing measures that benefit civil society.
