Mali

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH has been working in Mali since 1960. Its office is located in the capital, Bamako.

Mali has been in a state of unrest since 2012. Social conflict and extremist violence are on the rise in many parts of the country. The security situation remains critical, despite a peace agreement. A transitional government is now in power following a military coup, and has presented a roadmap for returning to democracy by March 2024.

The COVID-19 pandemic has weakened the country’s economic development and increased public debt. The country faces major challenges, such as ensuring basic state functions and services are maintained nationwide and continuing the peace process. It is also faced with the tasks of adapting agriculture to the effects of climate change and promoting innovative and agroecological value chains.

Our work on site: For democracy and sustainable agriculture

GIZ primarily works on behalf of the German Development Ministry (BMZ) and the German Federal Foreign Office in Mali, with financial support from Canada in some areas. It focuses on the following priority areas:

• Good governance, peace, stabilisation, displacement and migration
• Agriculture and resource conservation
• Environment and energy

In order to stabilise state functions in the long term, GIZ supports transparent public administration and greater citizen involvement. It does so by encouraging dialogue and advising institutions involved in the peace process. It supports internally displaced persons, refugees and host communities by providing vocational and social education services.

To adapt agriculture to the effects of climate change and strengthen the resilience of the population, GIZ promotes environmentally friendly farming methods and innovative and agroecological value chains. To achieve this, it focuses on the resource-efficient expansion of irrigation systems and greater profitability in production.

GIZ also works to make sanitation in Mail more environmentally sound by advising local institutions on developing a circular economy and by supporting the environmentally friendly expansion of municipal electrification using climate-friendly technology.
