Their renewed commitment in Addis Ababa marks a powerful step forward for Africa’s sustainable growth, shared prosperity, and regional integration.
The African Union and Germany met in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 6–7 November 2025 to review progress and align on shared priorities for continued collaboration. For more than two decades, Germany has been one of the AU’s closest and most consistent partners. in shaping continental cooperation. Through GIZ and others, Germany supports AU institutions in strengthening peace and security, creating economic opportunities, and advancing the just transition to climate-resilient growth.
Building on this foundation, this year’s negotiations outlined three priority areas:
- Sustainable Economic Development, Training, and Employment
- Peaceful and Inclusive Societies
- Climate and Energy, Just Transition
Beyond these priorities, the AU and Germany also cooperate on health and agricultural development.
Dr Tobias Thiel, Director of GIZ African Union, highlighted the importance of the AU–Germany partnership:
"At a time when international cooperation can no longer be taken for granted, Germany has taken a major step to deepen its partnership with the AU.
At GIZ, we are proud to contribute to connecting people, ideas and markets to create sustainable impacts for African citizens and new opportunities for businesses on our sister continents."
The meeting reflected a shared vision of partnership, progress, and mutual commitment to a sustainable and prosperous future for the continent.
