Context
Processing and marketing of agricultural products creates income and 80 per cent of jobs, and thus important for the socio-economic development in Ghana. Micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSME) contribute up to 70 per cent towards Ghana’s economic output. However, only a minor percentage of the agricultural and natural products are further processed in the country itself.
Many agribusiness enterprises need support to become more competitive and improve their supply chain management. Moreover, they often lack access to financial resources, innovative technologies, and digitalisation. Women entrepreneurs in particular need advice to prevail in a still male-dominated market.
Objective
AgriBiz aims to improve the conditions for creating productive employment in MSME in the agribusiness sector, especially for young people and women.
Approach
AgriBiz is jointly working with the Ghanaian Ministry of Trade and Industry but also respective member-based associations to improve the framework conditions for 500 MSMEs. In addition, AgriBiz strengthens business organisations in representing the interests of their members.
AgriBiz supports processing companies in their business development, in introducing technological solutions, with certification according to international standards and promotes the use of by-products in a circular economy. In addition, the project promotes companies that offer specific services and production inputs along the supply chains.
The EU financed component Market-Oriented Agriculture Programme (MOAP NW) in North-West Ghana strengthens quality agricultural production. Between 2017 and 2024 more than 83,000 farmers have been introduced to climate-smart agricultural practices and have consequently improved their yield and incomes.
