Context

Creating prospects for employment and income is a key challenge for economic development in Africa. The special initiative ‘ Decent Jobs for a Just Transition’ therefore specifically supports develoPPP projects in its partner countries that help to improve local working conditions and create new, decent jobs in selected African countries.

With develoPPP, GIZ cooperates with companies that are often industry leaders and drivers of innovation in their thematic areas. Joint projects benefit from the expertise, new technologies and creative approaches that the private partners bring to the collaboration. GIZ provides support through its expertise in development-related topics, its qualified local staff and its global network of political, business and civil society partners.

Objective

Projects in cooperation with companies improve training and employment in the special initiative’s African partner countries.

Approach

Interested German, European and local companies can submit their project ideas in regular idea competitions. The partnerships can be based in a wide variety of

sectors and pursue different approaches. They range from training local skilled workers and securing income to stabilising value chains and improving social standards. The BMZ provides technical and financial support between 100,000 and 2 million euros for suitable initiatives, with the company bearing at least half of the total costs.

In the projects supported by the Special Initiative ‘Decent Jobs for a Just Transition’, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH supports companies from planning to implementation as an experienced partner in development cooperation.
