Our Management Board leads the company in accordance with our social mandate – leveraging their experience in policy-making, business and international cooperation. Collectively, Thorsten Schäfer-Gümbel, Ingrid-Gabriela Hoven and Anna Sophie Herken represent GIZ to the outside world, set strategic priorities and bear responsibility for our work around the globe.
Management Board
GIZ is led by three individuals with different experience – united by a common goal: shaping sustainable development around the globe.
Tasks of the Management Board
Our Management Board is responsible for ensuring that we reliably fulfill our mandate – now and in future. Its three members together set the strategic course, take key decisions and ensure that our work achieves results around the world.
Their main tasks include:
- Setting our strategic orientation
- Exercising financial control
- Ensuring compliance with standards and legislation
- Representing GIZ to the outside world
- Providing leadership within the company
Supervisory and advisory oversight
The Management Board does not operate in a vacuum. It receives support from the Supervisory Board, which reviews all decisions to determine whether they align with company objectives, comply with relevant legislation and make responsible use of resources.
Additionally, the Management Board takes advice from the Board of Trustees and the Private Sector Advisory Board. They contribute external perspectives from the worlds of policy-making, research, academia, business and civil society – providing fresh impetus and a big-picture outlook.
Partnerships in international cooperation
‘In our role as a service provider in the area of international cooperation, partnerships are the key to success.’
