Context

Yemen is one of the world’s most arid countries. The critical water situation has deteriorated dramatically due to the civil war affecting the country since 2015. The major damage to infrastructure and the insufficient power supply for drinking water pumps and wastewater systems make it difficult for municipal water and sanitation companies to serve the population. The country lacks the resources, such as materials and staff, required to repair and maintain the damaged infrastructure.

Objective

The conditions required for Yemeni water and sanitation companies to provide the population with drinking water and sanitation services have improved.

Approach

The project operates in three fields of activity:

Planning and monitoring
It supports the water and sanitation companies in compiling a damage report on the current state of water and sanitation systems and in developing investment plans. In addition, it contributes to the companies’ efforts to record, revise and expand crisis-related indicators for use in infrastructure monitoring. In this area, the project also promotes the updating and use of databases.

Increasing resilience
The project implements various measures to ensure that water and sanitation companies improve their revenue, performance and operational efficiency. At the same time, it supports their women’s departments in creating and implementing a gender-sensitive action plan.

Developing capacities
Interest groups receive support to more efficiently plan and implement crisis-oriented drinking water and sanitation measures. To this end, the project works with them to develop guidelines, training modules and project proposals. It also offers demonstrations and training sessions.
