Context
Agriculture worldwide is increasingly challenged by climate change, declining biodiversity, depleted soils and power imbalances. There is an urgent need for agricultural and food systems to become more sustainable, resilient, and fair. Farmers must have an equal voice in policymaking and require financial and social security.
The essential transformation can only be achieved through collaboration. Governments, the private sector, civil society and farmers’ organisations must work together to drive meaningful change.
Objective
Regional and supra-regional farmers’ organisations actively shape the transformation of agricultural and food systems.

Approach
The project supports regional and supra-regional farmers’ organisations in actively engaging in global and regional fora. With their knowledge and experience, they help shape more environmentally friendly and equitable agricultural and food systems. At the same time, farmers’ organisations translate political agendas for their members and implement solutions at the local level.
To strengthen this role, the project supports farmers’ organisations in exchanging ideas across borders and enhancing the use of knowledge and lessons learned. This includes topics such as social security and increasing the participation by women, young people and marginalised groups.
At the start of the project, the programme explores opportunities for cooperation in regional project hubs in Zambia, Nigeria, Kenya and the Philippines. To this end, the project involves regional and supra-regional farmers’ organisations.
