Context

Tunisia is threatened by extreme water scarcity. This is exacerbated by climate change, the overuse of water resources and ineffective water management. The Tunisian Government focuses on increasing the water supply, while mechanisms to regulate water demand are insufficient. Additionally, water authorities face challenges in implementing existing strategies for a balanced water management.

Objective

Tunisia manages water sustainably. The fair, transparent, cost-efficient and sustainable use of water – in line with national environmental and climate goals – supports a balanced water regime.

Approach

The project works with the Tunisian Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries (MARHP) and with local and national water management authorities.

It supports the development of water management institutions, such as a national water agency and a regulatory authority, enabling better administration and coordination of water resources.

It is also setting up a digital system that provides data on water availability and consumption in a centralized system. This will enable Tunisia to make decisions based on reliable information.

Furthermore, the project focuses on local water management by working together with the regions and consumers. It develops tailored management plans with them and supports their implementation, with particular attention to women and vulnerable groups. The project also organises training sessions to encourage consumers to manage water resources responsibly.
