Context

Kenya’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have doubled since 2000, with agriculture and transport the biggest emitters. Using green hydrogen and its downstream products, such as ammonia or methanol, can contribute to climate change mitigation in the long term and develop new, low-carbon industries.

The Kenyan Government therefore wishes to utilise the potential of green technologies and establish the country as a leading centre for the generation of green hydrogen and its derivatives from green electricity. However, the institutional and economic frameworks required to do this are limited. At the same time, energy industry officials possess insufficient technical expertise and practical experience.

Objective

Kenya has put in place the key institutional, legal and staffing conditions needed to drive forward climate-friendly economic development with green hydrogen and its downstream products.

Approach

The project supports Kenya in laying the foundations for a green hydrogen economy and advises decision-makers on the creation of relevant legislation.

The project also works with Kenyan vocational training and higher education institutions to develop and mainstream hydrogen-related training content.

Finally, it delivers knowledge and information to the population and above all economic policy-makers, thus raising their awareness of the benefits of green hydrogen and its downstream products.
