Context

Indonesia, one of the world’s top ten greenhouse gas (GHG) emitters, plays a vital role in achieving the Paris Agreement and Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) goals. Without action, emissions could double by 2030 compared to 2010. However, Indonesia’s updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets aim to reduce emissions by 31.89 per cent using national resources and 43.2 per cent with international support.

As an archipelagic state, Indonesia faces rising sea levels, extreme weather, and coastal degradation, threatening ecosystems and communities. Home to 17 per cent of global biodiversity, Indonesia’s rainforests, mangroves, and coral reefs face deforestation, illegal fishing, and invasive species, worsened by climate change.

Objective

Indonesia is enhancing its efforts to safeguard biodiversity conservation and to mitigate climate change impacts while progressing toward its global commitments under the CBD and Paris Agreement.

Approach

The project supports the Indonesian government in integrating and implementing its climate and biodiversity policies through the following measures:

  • Advising on policies, encouraging collaboration between ministries, and offering training to improve planning, implementation, and alignment with NDCs.
  • Finding additional funding and working with financial and private organisations to ensure broader support.
  • Connecting climate action with biodiversity conservation to maximise impact.
  • Serving as an interface for the International Climate Initiative (IKI) by facilitating political dialogue, networking, and communication between all IKI project implementers and the Indonesian government.
