Baobab Fruit Powder for Codex Alimentarius Committee  

GIZ seeks to contract a service provider to support with the preparation of a standard proposal for Baobab Fruit Powder to the Codex Alimentarius Committee.

On behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) implements a project “Alliance for Product Quality in Africa”. The Alliance supports companies in Africa to improve the quality of African products so that they meet the requirements of international importers.

Baobab Fruit Powder is a relatively new product in the international market. The EU and the US markets had developed standards for imports of Baobab Fruit Powder; African countries, however, still lack a standard for international trade. The Alliance for Product Quality in Africa is therefore supporting the development of a pan-African standard in partnership with a sectoral association to facilitate trade with the product and build a quality basis for local production.

The Alliance for Product Quality is therefore looking for a qualified consulting firm to assist with the preparation of a proposal to the Codex Alimentarius Committee.

Tasks of the contractor relate to the following areas:

• Collect and analyse samples of Baobab Fruit Powder from different countries around Africa;
• Documentation of production methods in the locations visited;
• Compilation of results into a standard format together with results of an organoleptic panel;
• Preparation of a draft proposal to the Codex Alimentarius Committee
• Reporting

GIZ invites eligible and professional service firms with legal presence in South Africa to participate in this tender.
