Context
197 countries are signatories to the Paris Agreement and have committed themselves to implementing measures on climate action and making global financial systems compatible with climate action goals. Partnerships between Germany and cooperating countries contribute to a more ambitious global climate policy and its implementation.
Objective
The cooperating countries are developing and implementing more ambitious climate goals.
Approach
The project is geared towards the climate policy strategies of the cooperating countries and their respective support needs. Activities include advisory services provided to the German Federal Foreign Office on the implementation of German climate-related foreign policy. In addition, the project contributes to Germany's climate policy collaborations with cooperating countries as part of the International Climate Initiative (IKI).
The measures take into account climate and energy policy considerations as well as guidelines on poverty reduction, feminist foreign policy and security policy. Possible cooperation approaches range from professional exchange and subcontracting, service contracts and financing arrangements to the complete implementation of measures by third parties.
Through regular bilateral or regional dialogues, the project promotes exchange between the countries and the German Federal Foreign Office in order to build mutual trust in international climate negotiations. It also supports existing networks to enable transparency on climate issues.
The measures’ direct target groups include relevant actors from government, municipalities, civil society and the private sector, especially in G20 and V20 countries that are suffering the adverse effects of climate change.
