Protection and sustainable use of tropical forests (Biodiversity and climate)
Context
Brazilian legislation recognises 28 traditional peoples and communities (PCT). Thanks to their traditional way of life and their deep knowledge of ecological connections, PCT are considered the best guardians of the forest, the environment and biodiversity. However, they experience difficulties with land recognition on their territories as well as recurring threats and environmental and human rights violations.
The lack of reliable data addressing the occupation of traditional territories, the cultural aspects of PCTs and their contribution to climate protection makes it difficult for the Brazilian state to counteract rights violations and meet demands for the rights of PCTs. Promoting the use of the Traditional Territories Platform (PTT), a digital tool that integrates data regarding the traditional territories in Brasil and was developed since 2018 by the Federal Public Prosecution Office (MPF) and the National Council of Traditional Peoples and Communities (CNPCT), is crucial for the effective application to protect PCTs in their territories.
Objective
The human and environmental rights of traditional peoples and communities in their traditional territories is better protected in Brazil through the use of the Traditional Territories Platform and other digital tools.
Approach
The project develops innovative digital solutions for integrating geographical data and enabling automated analysis through the Traditional Territories Platform (PTT), so that the Federal Public Prosecution Office (MPF) and other public bodies can apply the qualified information in their work in the protection of traditional territories The project also builds up the PTT's multi-actor governance capabilities for multiplying knowledge and for the effective functioning of registration processes. Additionally, it offers training in the safe use of PTT information, data so that traditional peoples and communities can better monitor their territories. Organisations, leaders and representatives of PCTs receive digital training and support to use PTT and network strategically. The design and implementation of the project follows the "Leave no one behind" principle enshrined in the 2030 Agenda. All project activities apply a gender-sensitive approach and foresee actions aimed at youth.
