Supporting municipal partnerships

Experts Fund for Municipal Partnerships Worldwide

Context

The world's population is growing, and more and more people are moving to cities. Municipal authorities therefore play an important role in implementing the 2030 Agenda. They provide infrastructure and public services, and shape the local framework conditions for sustainable development. Through their close links to citizens and local self-government, they also contribute to political participation and democratic development.

German municipalities have extensive experience in local self-government. Many municipalities are now also involved in development cooperation, particularly through municipal partnerships worldwide. However, many participating cities, municipalities and districts do not have the necessary resources to achieve their goals.

Municipal partnerships help to develop and implement local solutions to global challenges. For example, improving access to municipal services, such as for disadvantaged groups, or establishing and consolidating administrative structures.

Objective

Municipal partnerships support selected municipalities in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda.

An expert and two colleagues from the city administration plan the sustainable design of a district in Durban, South Africa.

Approach

The project supports cities, municipalities and districts that have an active CP with a German municipality.

To achieve this, it carries out the following activities:

  • It provides advice on a wide range of municipal tasks such as waste management, climate protection, urban transport and e-governance. To do so, it deploys integrated experts and development workers or finances local experts in the partner municipalities.
  • Specialists support municipalities in developing and implementing projects that can be financed.
  • The project plans, advises and manages the deployment of experts and promotes dialogue and networking formats.
