Context

Peru is measuring its progress with respect to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda with a nationwide monitoring system. However, the information collected, especially from the provinces, is not yet sufficiently differentiated and therefore says little about the effectiveness of the measures. In addition, national and subnational stakeholders and institutions involved do not yet routinely monitor the impact of their actions. This complicates evidence-based decision-making about how to proceed further.

Peru has tasked the National Centre for Strategic Planning (CEPLAN) with coordinating and monitoring the implementation of the SDGs, which links national, regional and local planning. However, planning tools have so far scarcely been oriented towards the SDGs, even though they provide an important strategic framework for sustainable crisis recovery. This makes it all the more important that decision-makers can rely on accurate SDG monitoring data.

Objective

Evidence-based decision-making will make it possible to achieve the 2030 Agenda goals and recover sustainably from the COVID-19 crisis.

Approach

The project is working with CEPLAN in the following areas:

  • It advises on methods and processes to monitor, process and link data in the context of the 2030 Agenda and COVID-19 crisis response.
  • It trains managers working in public administration on how to monitor implementation of the SDGs using the national planning system.
  • The project identifies new opportunities for monitoring in provinces and, to achieve this, promotes local dialogue between policy-makers, public administrations, civil society and the private sector in order to jointly develop solutions.

The project pays attention to gender equality in all areas.
