Context
To keep global warming below 1.5°C, it is crucial to shift away from an economy dependent on fossil fuels such as coal, natural gas and oil.
New technologies are needed to complement strategies of preventing, shifting and reducing climate-damaging emissions. Power-to-X (PtX) is one such innovation. It involves producing carbon-neutral fuels and chemicals using renewable electricity. This will enable economic sectors such as the aviation, shipping, chemicals, steel, fertiliser and cement industries to operate without fossil fuels in the future.
Many partner countries of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH already have the potential to develop sustainable hydrogen and PtX value chains. This will enable them to lower emissions, reduce their dependency on the importation of fossil fuels, and offer high-value export products.
The PtX Hub plays a crucial role in driving the production and application of green hydrogen and Power-to-X in partner countries by providing a platform for international knowledge exchange.
Objective
Thanks to sustainably produced PtX products, the PtX Hub contributes to a global shift away from fossil fuels in emission-intensive economic sectors.
