Empowering returnees for a better tomorrow

Rebuilding a Life: Atif’s Path to Success

Atif, a 35-year-old from Attock, Punjab, faced significant financial challenges after returning to Pakistan from Saudi Arabia. Despite his skills as an electrician, adapting to the local job market proved difficult, and the COVID-19 pandemic only worsened his situation. With limited opportunities, financial pressures mounting, and a lack of direction, Atif found himself struggling to secure a stable source of income.

"Everything had changed when I returned," Atif recalls. "I tried different jobs on the advice of friends, but I ended up facing losses. I didn’t know what to do next."

One day, while scrolling through Facebook, he came across an ad for a Solar PV training programme offered by the Centres for Migration and Development (ZME), co-funded by the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Recognising an opportunity to enhance his skills in a rapidly growing industry, he decided to apply.

"I applied and then forgot about it," he says. "I didn’t think they would actually call me back."

But to his surprise, he was selected for the training—a decision that would change the course of his life.

Empowering Change Through Skill Development

The month-long training provided Atif with a comprehensive understanding of solar system installation, covering everything from fundamental concepts to advanced techniques.

"I was already an electrician, but solar energy was a new field for me," Atif explains. "The market demand was increasing, and this training came at the perfect time."

Beyond theoretical knowledge, the training incorporated hands-on practical sessions, equipping Atif with real-world experience in installing and maintaining solar systems. He also received essential toolkits, ensuring he could apply his new skills in the field. With this newfound expertise, Atif saw an opportunity to rebuild his career with confidence.

From Struggle to Success: A Sustainable Livelihood

After completing the training, Atif took a bold step and launched his own solar installation business. What started as a small initiative soon gained traction, and he began securing regular projects.

"Alhamdulillah, I am now able to provide for my family and live with dignity," Atif shares. "This training didn’t just empower me—it created a ripple effect. I have been able to employ three people, giving them the opportunity to earn and build a better future for themselves."

By creating job opportunities for others, Atif is not only improving his own life but also uplifting his community. His success highlights how targeted skill development programmes can uplift individuals to drive sustainable change.

Empowering Returnees for a Better Tomorrow

ZME’s Solar PV training is part of a broader initiative aimed at supporting returnees in their socio-economic reintegration. By equipping individuals with in-demand skills, the programme is not just creating employment opportunities but also fostering self-reliance and long-term economic stability.

Atif’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of skill development programmes. With access to the right training and resources, returnees like him can overcome challenges, reintegrate successfully, and build sustainable livelihoods.
