Context
Kenya is pursuing an ambitious climate policy. At the same time, the Government wishes to promote economic and social development with the aim of creating more jobs and improving the living conditions for the entire population.
The country’s economy is heavily dependent on natural resources and is therefore very susceptible to climate fluctuations. The main sources of income are agriculture and fishing. Today the consequences of climate change, such as droughts and flooding, are already very tangible in Kenya. This leads to conflicts and makes it difficult to provide people with supplies. Women and other vulnerable groups are disproportionately affected.
Kenya and Germany launched a Climate and Development Partnership in 2022. Through this partnership, Germany wishes to support the Kenyan Government in stepping up its action on climate and improving its preparations to cope with the consequences of climate change.
Objective
The Kenyan Government has improved the conditions both for implementing its climate policy and for improving gender equality.

Approach
The project supports the Kenyan Ministry of Environment, Climate Change & Forestry in developing and implementing policy instruments. They include the national climate targets and the regulations governing the carbon markets. The project provides specialist know-how, trains experts, and also supports consultations within the Government and with private-sector and civil-society organisations.
Furthermore, the project works with the ministry on mobilising, monitoring and reporting on climate financing. The funding is necessary for implementing climate action and for adapting to climate change, e.g. further developing sources of renewable energy.
The project advises two districts on making better preparations for the consequences of climate change in the future and on promoting climate-friendly technologies.
