Context

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission is instrumental in developing regulations, policies, strategies, programmes and projects for its member states. The measures make a significant contribution to political and economic growth in West Africa.

In view of the instability in the region, which jeopardises economic development and democratic principles in the member states, sustainable solutions are required. If it is to achieve these, the ECOWAS Commission must improve its organisational efficiency, promote gender equality, optimise its public perception and mobilise increased financial resources.

It is therefore advancing with its professional, results-based activities and has stepped up communication with citizens. This supports ECOWAS in integrating its member states politically and economically at international level. It also contributes to peace in the region.

Objective

The ECOWAS Commission and other ECOWAS institutions and agencies have improved their internal structures and processes in personnel and financial management. In addition to implementing projects and programmes in a results-based and gender-specific manner, their cooperation within the organisation has improved.

Approach

The project focuses on improving internal structures and processes within the ECOWAS Commission and other ECOWAS institutions and agencies. To achieve this, it introduces integrated, impact-oriented, and gender-equitable governance and management processes. These align with Vision 2050, which aims to promote peace and growth in West Africa.

Additionally, the project contributes to increasing the visibility and communication of ECOWAS activities.

The project is preparing the ECOWAS Commission and ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID) for certification by the European Union (EU). The project receives financial support from the EU. The certification enables ECOWAS to utilize EU funds for extensive financing.
