Germany in the Eyes of Indonesia - A strategic partnership under scrutiny

How do people in Indonesia view Germany?

How are Germany’s efforts in connection with this geopolitically key country in South-East Asia? How important is Germany for Indonesia today? Does Indonesia see Germany as a partner with whom it can pursue shared interests and values?

These and similar questions were answered in a series of around 40 interviews with Indonesian personalities from the fields of business, politics, science, media, civil society, art & culture, religion and sport and have now been summarised in a study report: "Germany in the eyes of Indonesia - A strategic partnership under scrutiny".

Indonesia's growing role in the global economy, particularly within the G20, makes it an important player in environmental and climate issues. Forecasts predict that Indonesia will become the fourth largest economy by 2030, driven by its young population, digitalisation of cities, robust infrastructure and abundant resources that are critical to the global energy transition. Indonesia's democratic stability, investment friendliness and non-aligned diplomacy contribute to global multilateralism, as demonstrated by the G20 Summit (Bali 2022) and ASEAN Summit (Jakarta 2023).

For Germany, too, Indonesia is one of the global partner countries with which a strong partnership has existed for decades. Characterised by the values of existing cooperation and driven by the rapid pace of change in the world, new opportunities are emerging to shape future cooperation, according to the interviewees.

Enrichments, ideas and perceptions that could be relevant for Germany according to the respondents, can be found summarized in the study "Germany in the eyes of Indonesia - A strategic partnership under scrutiny".
