Women in Textiles: Yasmin Saleem’s Path to Empowerment

Overcoming Societal Norms and Challenges

Faisalabad, often referred to as the Manchester of Pakistan, is home to millions of textile workers from across the country. People from far-flung areas move here with dreams of succeeding in the textile realm. While the sector supports over 15 million jobs in Pakistan, women's participation remains significantly lower than men’s, constrained by societal norms discouraging women’s employment. Yet, amidst these challenges, Yasmin Saleem’s journey from humble beginnings to success stands as a testament to her unwavering pursuit of excellence and the transformative potential of empowering women in the textile industry.

Yasmin's venture into the textile industry

Yasmin's venture into the textile industry was driven by socio-economic struggles rather than choice. At just twenty-one, she entered the world of textile mills out of necessity to provide for her family. The early days were tough; Yasmin juggled the demands of motherhood and household responsibilities while learning the ropes in an industry that was foreign to her. The lack of financial resources and formal education in textile manufacturing added to her challenges. Moreover, she faced societal skepticism about a woman working outside the home, especially in a male-dominated environment.

Reflecting on her journey, Yasmin recalls her initial experiences upon entering the textile industry.

"When I first entered the textile industry, I was met with skepticism and doubt, but I was determined to prove myself, not just for me but for my family." recounts Yasmin.

This determination was her driving force as she sought out opportunities to learn and grow. Yasmin enrolled in relevant diploma courses and training programmes, gaining the skills necessary to navigate the complexities of textile manufacturing.

Pioneering Change at Maheen Textile

A pivotal moment in her career came when she spearheaded a two-way communication process at her workplace, Maheen Textiles, advocating for the value of female workers' insights and opinions.

"This initiative not only empowered women but also fostered a more inclusive and collaborative work environment," Yasmin shares proudly.

Notably, it broke the traditional mold of a top-down approach in a male-dominated setting, giving women a platform to voice their ideas and concerns.

Maheen Textiles has been working with GIZ Pakistan to improve labour standards. This joint effort has highlighted women’s voices, championing gender equality and demonstrating how inclusive practices can drive productivity and innovation.  It has also led to a range of employee-centric facilities that prioritise well-being and gender inclusivity at the company. The initiative has fostered a safe and supportive environment for female workers.

Yasmin Saleem’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the textile industry's need to invest in safe working environments for women and address their fundamental needs. On behalf of the German development cooperation, GIZ Pakistan is supporting the textile and fashion industry of Pakistan to enhance labour standards and sensitise it to the needs of women so that more women like Yasmin can contribute to Pakistan’s economic progress.
