Youths commemorate World Oceans Day with open dialogue
Youth networks from around Suva gathered for an open dialogue “talanoa” session for the World Oceans Day commemoration at the GIZ Haus, Fiji. The talanoa was a platform to highlight conservation efforts in the protection of the ocean and the sustainable management of its resources.
The session focused on sharing experiences, challenges, and strategies concerning youth engagement in conservation.
In her message, Pacific Youth Council Coordinator Miliana Iga shared that the Pacific Ocean is more than just water; it is the lifeblood of Pacific cultures, livelihoods, and economic development. "The Pacific Ocean shapes our identity and fuels our collective narrative. This deep connection is central to the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent which places the ocean at the heart of our future," Iga said.
In her keynote speech, Dr. Winifereti Nainoca stressed the importance of supporting local communities in achieving the sustainable development goals. "We need significantly stronger local, national, and international action from both government and corporate leaders," Dr Nainoca shared. She also called on the ratification of the High Seas Treaty.
Other issues raised included the importance of bridging traditional knowledge and science, the need to address plastic pollution and its ocean impacts and the need for collective ocean efforts. The World Oceans Day is held annually on 8 June and the theme for 2024 is “Awaken New Depths."
