Stories of Change: Journey of Entrepreneurial Advocacy in ASEAN

As a formidable lawyer and entrepreneur, Ms Chanleakhena Sophat manoeuvred through the intricacies of corporate law with finesse. Her journey, however, transcended the confines of the courtroom, as she emerged as a beacon of empowerment for women entrepreneurs across ASEAN.

In a region where small and medium enterprises (SMEs) formed the bedrock of economic growth, she recognized the untapped potential of women entrepreneurs. Despite their pivotal role, they grappled with myriad challenges – from limited networks to legal barriers.

Ms. Sophat, driven by a unique and innovative approach, immersed herself in initiatives that championed women's economic empowerment. Leading the charge at the Cambodian Women Entrepreneurs Association (CWEA), she envisioned a future where women not only thrived in business but also advocated for consumer rights.

The pandemic's seismic impact further underscored the need for solidarity among entrepreneurs. Undeterred by adversity, Ms. Sophat reached out to her peers, fostering a community where knowledge was shared and resilience was cultivated. Through her involvement with the ASEAN Women Entrepreneurs Network (AWEN), she harnessed the power of collaboration to navigate the tumultuous landscape of entrepreneurship.“I decided to become more involved in the work of the Cambodian Women Entrepreneurs Association (CWEA), to build partnerships and mentor other women who are in a similar position.” – she mentioned confidently.

In 2023, Ms Sophat's unwavering commitment to her cause earned her a prestigious ASEAN Access Ambassador (AAA) role. Alongside other trailblazing women leaders from across the region, she embarked on a mission to amplify the voices of women entrepreneurs and promote cross-border collaborations.

After having participated in some of the events hosted on ASEAN Access and supported by GIZ, I was contacted by business representatives from other countries seeking information about the market in Cambodia. The appointment as an AAA not only propelled Ms. Sophat's entrepreneurial journey to new heights but also ignited a fervent passion for consumer advocacy. Armed with her legal expertise and entrepreneurial acumen, she recognized the pressing need to address consumer rights violations, particularly concerning unsafe products and online scams, further demonstrating her commitment to social justice.

In a nation with nascent consumer protection laws, Ms Sophat saw an opportunity to effect meaningful change. With a sense of urgency, she rallied like-minded individuals, envisioning the establishment of a formal consumer association to safeguard the rights of Cambodian consumers, especially women.

"In addition to being legal professionals, we are engaged in several social projects and interested in forming a consumer association so we can educate and empower women, especially," Ms Sophat remarked, her voice resonating with determination.

Through her tireless efforts, she shattered glass ceilings and paved the way for generations of women to thrive in the dynamic landscape of entrepreneurship. In her journey, she found success and purpose – a purpose rooted in empowering others and championing justice for all.
