GIZ-implemented Project “Institutional Strengthening of the Biodiversity Sector in ASEAN (ISBII)" closes after 14 years
Representatives from the German Embassy graced back-to-back events celebrating Germany’s cooperation with the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB). The closing event of the German-funded project “Institutional Strengthening of the Biodiversity Sector in ASEAN” was attended by the Embassy’s Deputy Head of Mission Mathias Kruse.
The initiative, implemented by GIZ Philippines and the Pacific Island Countries in cooperation with the ACB supported the institution in fulfilling its mandate in conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity. The project included supporting ASEAN inputs to the Convention on Biological Diversity, which set ambitious targets like protecting 30% of the land and seas by 2030.
In another component, the operations and management of ASEAN Heritage Parks Programme, the region’s flagship program for protected area management, were supported. In his speech Mr. Kruse highlighted some of the key achievements of this project and the need for continued joint efforts to protect biodiversity which transcends borders.
Ambassador Andreas Pfaffernoschke attended the Partner’s Night, which brought together the large variety of partners in a more informal setting. He lauded Germany’s overall partnership with the ACB which goes back more than a decade and has brought about tangible results in protecting biodiversity in the region.
