Transforming Pakistan's Textile Sector: Fair - Equal - Competitive
Pakistan's textile and fashion industry is booming. As a major industrial sector in the country, it significantly contributes as one of the largest exports worldwide. An annual turnover of more than USD 19 billion and the employment of 15 million people is proof of its importance for the country's economy.
Despite the growth, the sector is facing multifaceted challenges. Labour and environmental standards are lagging in meeting international standards. Women’s employment rates are comparatively low, especially within managerial positions represented by only 0.6 % of women. People with disabilities (PWD) are facing similar issues. About 6.2% of people in Pakistan live with some form of disability, 50% of whom are women. Finding employment in the textile and fashion industry is difficult, even though textile companies in Punjab must employ 3% of the workforce with PWDs by law.
