Context

African countries play an important role in developing international solutions to global challenges. While overcoming hunger, poverty and inequality is still the main concern of most countries, the young and dynamic population is pushing for growth and change.

Economically and politically, Africa harbours great potential for innovation, for example in the field of expanding renewable energies to meet the growing demand for energy and to export green energy.

The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) has published the new priorities of its Africa strategy for 2023: long-term economic development, overcoming poverty, health, rule of law and peace. Respectful cooperation is based on an understanding of shared values and goals.

BMZ aligns its projects with the goals of the African Union (AU) and its member states, and supports in representing Africa in multilateral forums. BMZ implements feminist development policy and aims to help overcome colonial continuities and social prejudices towards Africa.

Objective

BMZ has received needs-based advice on how it can further develop its Africa strategy and coherently organise German development cooperation.

Approach

The project advises BMZ’s Africa Division on implementing and strategically developing the ministry's Africa policy. To achieve this, advisors monitor and analyse current developments on the African continent. The project organises events for BMZ in which dialogues take place between African and German stakeholders and experts. It supports BMZ in communicating, implementing, and monitoring the Africa strategy.
