URSU's swift action saves life: Said Khan receives vital medical treatment in Peshawar

A 59-year-old urban Afghan refugee named Said Khan has lived in Peshawar for the past 40 years. He recently faced a medical emergency after he experienced severe chest pain. It was in this moment of need that he approached the Urban Refugees Support Unit (URSU), established by the Commissionerate for Afghan Refugees (CAR) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with the support of the German Government.

Understanding the urgency of the situation, the URSU desk officers acted quickly and connected Said Khan with the medical assistance he needed. With URSU’s support, he was swiftly taken to the renowned Peshawar Institute of Cardiology where he received a life-saving surgery. The treatment was not only swift, but also entirely free of cost.

On behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), GIZ Pakistan is supporting the CAR in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to improve access to public services for urban Afghan refugees and Pakistani host communities. With the support of the German Government, three URSUs have so far been established in Peshawar, Haripur and Mardan. These units provide referral services to urban Afghan refugees like Said Khan, covering health, education, livelihood, protection and repatriation.
