Sustainable infrastructure: water, energy, transport
Context
Transport accounts for around a quarter of global energy-related greenhouse gas emissions. In order to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, new emissions targets must be aimed for and emissions drastically cut. However, existing international climate initiatives such as the NDC Partnership (Nationally Determined Contributions, NDCs) lack a focus on individual policy areas such as transport.
New thematic initiatives were launched at the Climate Change Conference in Glasgow (COP26). However, these only address certain sub-areas such as shipping and electromobility. To achieve a comprehensive paradigm shift, it is important to improve international cooperation across the entire transport sector and to set ambitious climate protection targets.
Objective
National governments are working together in international partnerships to decarbonise transport.
Approach
The project works on the following areas:
- Establishing platforms such as the Transport and Climate Change Week that encourage mutual learning between the international participants.
- Providing an online tool (NDC Transport Tracker) that uses artificial intelligence to track the global progress of the transport transformation. Using automated text mining, the program analyses the climate and transport policy measures employed by individual countries and provides information on their climate policy ambitions with respect to transport.
- Improving access to climate financing for transport projects in East Africa. It is also preparing a national programme to decarbonise informal transportation, which will be transferable to other regions.
