The Cycling Week in Hanoi and Hue City
Hanoi, May 29, 2023 – On the occasion of World Bicycle Day on June 3 (#June3WorldBicycleDay) and World Environment Day on June 5, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH (commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ)), Vietsoftpro, and the Hue City People’s Committee co-hosted the Cycling Week. World Bicycle Day is an annual event celebrated on June 3 to raise awareness of the benefits of cycling.
The Cycling Week was organised with a series of different activities:
On Monday, May 29, the first Vietnamese Technical Guideline for Bicycle Infrastructure Design was launched in Hanoi with the Administration of Technical Infrastructure (ATI) under the Ministry of Construction, World Resources Institute (WRI), and HealthBridge (HB).
On Wednesday and Thursday, the updated public bike-sharing (PBS) app was open for testing at two stations in the center of Hue.
On Friday, June 2, the first consultation meeting was held on the Hue Bicycle Transportation Development Plan. The meeting provided an opportunity for stakeholders to provide feedback on the plan, which will guide the development of cycling in Hue City in the coming years.
On Saturday morning, June 3, a public cycling event was held in Hue on the occasion of World Bicycle Day. This was followed by free bike lessons for children on Sunday.
The Cycling Week aims to promote cycling culture and raise awareness of the public on the benefits of cycling as a healthy and sustainable form of transport. Cycling is a sustainable, convenient, accessible, cost-saving, and environmentally friendly mode of transport for all. It contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the transport sector while improving air quality and public health. Cycling also contributes to reducing pollution and noise in the city, preserving heritage, and cultural values.
The activities of Cycling Week are expected to draw attention of designers, planners, and local policy makers on creating an enabling environment for citizens to encourage cycling. The week also brings interesting experiences for residents and tourists visiting Hue with testing the updated PBS App and bike lessons for both children and their parents. This is expected to motivate and encourage the active participation of citizens.
The Hue City People’s Committee is committed to promoting cycling in Hue City. The events around World Bicycle Day are just one part of the city’s efforts to make cycling a more attractive option for residents and visitors.
“We are excited to co-host these events during the Cycling Week,” said Daniel Herrmann, Head of the Climate Policy Unit within GIZ Vietnam. “We believe that cycling is a great way to improve our health, reduce our carbon footprint, and make our cities more livable. We hope that these events will encourage more people to choose cycling as their mode of transportation."
The series of activities during the Cycling week belong to the project “Promote and Pilot a Public Bike-Sharing (PBS) Scheme in Vietnam towards Sustainable Urban Mobility and Smart Cities” funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) through DeveloPPP. GIZ in collaboration with Hue City People’s Committee and Vietsoftpro implemented the project under the umbrella of the “Support to Vietnam for the Implementation of the Paris Agreement II (VN-SIPA II)” project.
