Developing business models for climate-friendly urban services
Project description
Title: Qualifications for climate-friendly urban services
Commissioned by: German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, BMZ
Country: Peru
Lead executing agency: Ministry of Production (Ministerio de la Producción – Produce)
Overall term: 2022 to 2024
Context
Peru’s economy has grown strongly in the last decade. People are buying significantly more goods, which is leading to increased industrial production and higher volumes of traffic in cities.
These two sectors of the economy have so far covered their increased energy consumption with fossil fuels and are dependent on old and environmentally harmful technologies. For the transition to greener production systems, industry and public transport providers need to transform their business models.
Despite the efforts of the Peruvian Government, the conditions for the development of formal and climate-friendly business models in the areas of energy efficiency in industry and urban public transport are still limited.
Objective
The conditions for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to implement climate-friendly business models in the areas of energy efficiency in industry and urban public transport have improved.
Approach
The project facilitates SMEs developing formal and climate-friendly business models in the field of energy efficiency in industry or urban public transport. It does so by working in the following priority areas:
- It improves training opportunities and pertinent information for the operating personnel of companies. The project draws on approaches to dual-track vocational training based on the German model and follows a gender equality approach.
- It optimises or develops support mechanisms of the partner ministry for the development of climate-friendly business models. It also promotes training offers for companies in the field of energy efficiency in industry or urban public transport.
- The project is expanding the advisory structure for municipal and private companies and supporting them in implementing pilot measures – for example, for the transfer of climate-friendly, low-carbon technologies.
