Urban ecosystem-based adaptation measures in Quang Binh at a glance
Fostering ecosystem-based climate change adaptation (EbA) is one of the key objectives of the ‘Support to Vietnam for the Implementation of the Paris Agreement’ (VN-SIPA) project. GIZ in collaboration with its local partners is currently implementing urban ecosystem-based adaptation activities in Quang Binh Province.
Three EbA measures are being piloted in Dong Hoi City: (i) façade greening and rooftop gardens, (ii) sustainable urban drainage systems, and (iii) water retention areas. These initiatives aim to help the local people strengthen climate change resilience in the city.
Façade greening and a rooftop garden have been installed at the office building housing the Management Unit of Public Services of Dong Hoi city. An area of 765m2 of rooftop and façade has been covered in vegetation. A water storage and filtration unit of 50m3 capacity was built underground to collect rainwater from building surfaces, reducing inundation and storing water for irrigation as well. The intervention aims to reduce island heat effects and inundation due to extreme weather events, while improving office energy efficiency and ecological services.
A sustainable urban drainage system has been designed for a 352m2 public area at the Bac Ly intersection. The structure comprises collection pipes and underground water tanks that can store 150m3 of rainwater. This system is expected to reduce the threat of damage from inundation, while providing a green, permeable area for public education and recreation.
Water retention areas have been integrated into the brand new Cau Rao river park, adjacent to the Cau Rao river. Using the ‘Delay – Store – Drain’ concept, the intervention combines permeable pavements, bio-swales, natural corridors, and water retention basins in a public recreational park. It’s designed to increase the water storage capacity of a river buffer zone, benefitting 29,000 residents.
In Vietnam, GIZ expects that these nature-based solutions will become best practices serving to inspire systematic replications in other urban areas to boost climate resilience in similar contexts.
