Viet Nam accelerates to phase out fossil fuel vehicle by 2040
On 22 July 2022, Deputy Prime Minister Le Van Thanh signed Decision No. 876/QD-TTg approving the Action Programme on green energy transformation, reducing carbon and methane emissions in the transport sector.
According to the Decision's green energy transition roadmap, the overall objective of the Strategy is to develop a green transport system towards the goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
In particular, the Decision outlines a specific target by 2050, in which 100% of road transport, including public transport vehicles, should be electric or use green energy as well as proper charging infrastructures that provide green energy should be set up nationwide.
Furthermore, the transformation roadmap with urban traffic includes:
By 2025, 100% of buses will use electricity and green energy.
By 2030, the percentage of vehicles using electricity and green energy will reach at least 50%, and 100% of taxis will use electricity and green energy.
By 2040, the production, assembly and import of automobiles and motorcylces using fossil fuels will be discontinued.
By 2050, the country will have a complete green transport network with net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.
In Viet Nam, in the framework of the NDC-TIA (NDC Transport Initiative for Asia) project, GIZ and its partners support capacity building and develop legal framework to promote low-carbon development and GHG emission reduction in transport, contributing to the implementation of Vietnam’s NDC (Nationally Determined Contribution). Especially, one of the specific objectives of the project is to support to strengthening mechanisms, policies, and roadmap for electric mobility development at the national and city level. This would be a fundamental premise for the deployment of electric vehicles beyond the pilot phase to support Viet Nam in fulfilling its commitments under Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and the goal of reducing methane emissions of Viet Nam.
